Academics

We invite all students to “Catch the Monarch Wave to Success”. By setting personal goals for each trimester, each student knows what they need to do in order to feel success. In grades 3-6, they use the school Agenda, to keep track of their assignments and special projects. In addition to email and phone, this is a great communication tool between home and school. Parents are to check the Agenda daily to see what is expected that day from their child. In grades K-2, students receive Homework Packets for the week. Parents should expect those to come home each Monday.

Academic lessons are directly aligned with state standards. Progress Reports and Report Cards are standards-based and go out each trimester. In addition, each trimester, K-3rd grade teachers conduct CSR (Class Size Reduction) testing to see how each student has progressed through the trimester. In October each year, we have Minimum Day Conference Week, which gives our teachers an opportunity to meet with each family to discuss strengths and weaknesses, and each child’s progress towards academic proficiency.

In Kindergarten through 2nd grade, students receive weekly Homework Packets to be completed before Friday each week. Beginning in 3rd grade, students receive daily Homework Assignments. They organize their assignments in our School Agenda. This is a great tool for them to prepare for their future and a wonderful communication resource between home and school. Please look at your child's Agenda daily to check his or her work and individual progress.

For our students needing accelerated curriculum, we offer our GATE program, which is included within our normal day schedule. After school GATE enrichment classes are offered, as possible. Also, beginning this year, GATE students in grades 3-6 are also clustered in their homeroom classes. Our GATE program offers a multitude of teaching strategies, including more in depth curriculum, independent projects or additional parts of a classroom project. This year, due to budget constraints, our after-school enrichment program will be offered to GATE students on a fee basis.

Other services offered to students during the day as interventions include: EL (English Learner)program, 504, RSP (Resource), Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Adapted Physical Education, and SDC (Special Day Class).

Our after school intervention is called SISP (Supplemental Instructional Services Program). See the “Beyond the Bell” tab under Programs for a delineation of this program.

All assessments drive our instruction. As we see the evidence or results from students, we use that data to see what we need to teach next or reteach. With PLCs (Professional Learning Communities), our teachers meet regularly to consistently share, collaborate and analyze data. They conduct station rotations to share all students in a grade level, thereby holding themselves accountable for the education of all students. They articulate across the grade level, vertically articulate with the grade level educators below and above them, and enjoy articulating with that grade level of teachers throughout the district.

As new programs are added to Mariposa, such as our Music Lab and The Mind Institute’s Math Lab, our teachers are provided staff development to then help enrich the curriculum for all students. With these labs and our AR (Accelerated Reader) program, the research on them shows that this new technology will help increase academic scores in reading and math.

We have added technology into each classroom with a teaching station including a laptop, ELMO Document Scanning Camera, and an LCD Projector. These resources allow much of our curriculum to be learned through visual conceptualization and modeling by the teacher and peers. This equipment has literally changed the way we teach.
